Leeds United should learn from Fulham’s mistake

Ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, Fulham Football Club spent over £100 million to boost their survival bid, yet they got relegated with five more games to play.

A large part of the reason for Fulham’s failure was wrong recruitment. A total of 19 players were brought into the club, including loans, which made a lot of players who worked hard to gain promotion being relegated to the bench.

Leeds must get the balance right in the transfer market. They have been linked with players like Rodrigo de Paul, Julian Draxler, Josko Gvardiol, Crysencio Summerville, Milot Rasica etc., but will these players fit into Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play?

They have brought in Rodrigo Moreno and Robin Koch, who are both good players, and Bielsa influenced their decisions. Rodrigo Moreno is an upgrade compared to Patrick Bamford, due to his age, experience and he plays for Spain’s national team.

Leeds transfers should be more of quality than quantity, because they have an astute manager in Bielsa who drills players to conform to what he wants.

Players that can’t bend to what he wants will only bring problems to the dressing room, thereby affecting the team negatively.

Leeds should keep the core of the players that got the team promoted, because they already know how Bielsa works and what he demands of them.

The club needs to be “street-wise” in their dealings and focus on where they lack quality players. Their decisions could either relegate the team, or keep them up.
