Ellan Road saw a seven goal thrilling match between Leeds United and Newcastle United. The Whites were victorious after going a goal down in the 26th minute after completing a enormous comeback against the Magpies. Leeds went on to win the match 5-2 after goals from Bamford, Dallas, Rodrigo, Alioski and Harrison securing the win which now moves them up to 13th position in the league just above Newcastle United.
Leeds United started with the same lineup as last time with only Pablo Hernandez coming on the bench after injury problems, while Newcastle made 4 changes to their lineup since various injuries and Covid-19 infections affecting Steve Bruce’s team selection.
Newcastle started on the front foot with Jeff Hendrick giving the Magpies a 26th minute lead after Callum Wilson’s flick which picked out Hendrick at the far post slotted it home with a clean finish. Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo gave the home side a lead after the one hour mark. In the 65th minute Newcastle exposed the home side’s set piece problems after scoring from a corner whipped in by Ryan Fraser and the header met by Ciaran Clark to draw Newcastle level at 2-2.
Mr. Versatile Stuart Dallas stepped up and scored his second goal of the Premier League campaign to give his side the lead in the 77th minute. Off the bench came Pablo Hernández for his 5th appearance this season. Just moments later the Spanish player grabbed 2 Assists to set up his teammates Alioski and Harrison who got the goals to seal themselves a victory. Newcastle who tried to find a third goal were caught on the break by the intense pressing of Leeds which led them concede two goals in the space of 4 minutes. Harrison’s sweet strike was the perfect icing on the cake for Bielsa’s men.
Alioski is the first Macedonian player to score a goal since April 1998. This victory against the Magpies takes them to 13th position ahead of Newcastle who remain in the 14th spot due to goal difference.
In this match Leeds showed perfect fighting spirit until the end. A total of 25 shots saw Leeds dominate the attacking stats even with highest chances created which they were later rewarded with goals. It was a well deserved victory for the Whites as they dominated the game in every aspect although they gave away 2 goals including from a set piece but showed good character to comeback and get a second victory at home.
At the weekend Leeds United will face Manchester United who are currently placed 9th in the table with 2 games in hand which will definitely be an exciting match to watch because of their history against each other and due to their current form.
